Don Banks passed away

Dr Don Banks passed away on 11 August 2013, at home in his library, at the age of 73.

Dr. Banks was born on 17 March 1940. He graduated in civil engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and obtained a PhD in civil engineering from the University of Illinois. He began a 35-year career at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg in 1962, where he went on to become chief of Soil and Rock Mechanics Division. Following his retirement in 1997, Don has continued to consult with major water resource and other Federal agencies on geotechnical projects.

Dr. Banks was named a fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Rock Mechanics Association. He was an active member of the ISRM and participated in many ISRM meetings and activities. Until his death he was actively involved in the work of the ISRM Commission on Testing Methods.

The rock engineering community and the ISRM have lost a great supporter and friend. At this time our thoughts are with his close family and friends.
