5th International Symposium on In-situ Rock Stress

The 5th International Symposium on In-situ Rock Stress (ISRSV) sponsored by ISRM was held in Beijing, China, on August 25-27 2010, which is jointly organized by Institute of Crustal Dynamics (ICD) from China Earthquake Administration (CEA), Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME), and Seismological Society of China (SSC).  ISRSV was chaired by Prof. F.R. Xie, director of ICD.  Professor Y.C. Liu, Deputy Director General of CEA, Professor J.A. Hudson, President of the ISRM, and Professor C.A. Tang, President of China Group of ISRM, gave the warm welcome address at the opening ceremony, respectively.

ISRSV focused on new developments in numerical modeling and advanced measuring techniques of Crustal stress in engineering practices, and new connections between traditional and geophysical methods for the investigation of crustal stress. Six keynote presentations were given during the Symposium, which were presented by Prof. O.Stephansson, Prof. B.C. Haimson, Prof. Y.L. Shi, Prof. J.A. Hudson, Prof. M. Lu, and Prof. F.R. Xie, respectively. Six Sessions including a special session chaired by Prof. Haimson were organized.

196 delegates from 21 countries/regions attended the symposium and contributed 128 papers were selected for oral presentation and 22 for the poster session. One volume of the proceedings and a CD, edited by Prof.F.R.Xie, containing 5 keynote papers and 138 ordinary papers, were published by CRC Press / Balkema.

The social program included the welcome reception, the banquet, one half-day local tour for all participants to visit the Forbidden City in Beijing.
