A review of the ISRM ISCAS2008
Regional Symposium held in China, September 2008

The ISRM sponsored Regional Symposium - International Symposium on Conservation of Ancient Sites 2008 (ISCAS-2008) was successfully held on September 22-24, 2008 in DunhuangCChina. The symposium was organized by the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM), Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, the Dunhuang Academy and Lanzhou University The venue of the symposium was in the Academic Report Hall of the Dunhuang Academy, Mogao Grottoes.

Opening ceremony

More than 170 participants from China, American, Italy, Japan, Iran, South Korea, UK, USA and Portugal attended the symposium. Two volumes of proceedings in English and Chinese were published.

The overall objective of the Symposium is to demonstrate the latest advances and achievements on Conservation of Ancient Sites over the past years and to provide a forum for the discussions on the future development in this field.

Prof. John A. Hudson, the President of ISRM, Xian Hui, Vice Governor of Gansu Province;Prof. Qian Qihu, President of CSRME;Prof. Zhou Xuhong, President of Lanzhou University;Prof. Fan Jinshi, Director of Dunhuang Academy;Prof. Sun Yulong, the mayor of Dunhuang city, gave a warm welcome address in the opening ceremony. Many experts pay high attention to this symposium. Prof. John A Hudson, Prof. Fan Jinshi, Prof. Charles Fairhurst, Prof. J. Rodrigues Prof. Li Zuixiong, Prof. Masaaki Sawada Prof. Chung-In Lee, Prof. Massimo Coli, Prof. Wang Sijing, Prof. Huang Kezhong, Prof. Tadateru Nishiura, Prof. Wang Xudong, Prof. Gong Liang and Prof. Yoshinori Iwasaki gave keynote presentation for this Symposium, respectively. More than 50 experts introduced their scientific research achievements in the following themes:

  • Study on Environment and Conservation of Ancient Sites
  • Study on water environment and salt disease of Ancient Sites
  • Study on Existing Condition survey and analysis of ancient sites
  • Study on weathering and stability of ancient sites
  • Study on monitoring and application of new technology of ancient sites
  • Study on experimental protective materials of ancient sites
