Terms of reference

Purpose of the Commission

  • To encourage international collaboration and exchange of ideas and information in the field of preservation of ancient sites by fostering and organizing international Conferences, Symposia and Workshops;
  • To encourage teaching, research and advancement of knowledge in this field;
  • To clarify the deterioration progress and mechanism of ancient sites as valuable world heritage from the rock mechanics point of view, and through the cultural significance;
  • To suggest possible treatments for restoration and preservation through scientific research and case studies;
  • To integrate the cooperation between natural sciences and social sciences in this field.

Product of the Commission

  • Organizing the Third International Symposium on Conservation of Ancient Sites (ISCAS-2018). Time: 2018, and venue: Dunhuang, China;
  • Organizing Conference on Historical Mining Sites of Turkey in 2015, and venue: Trabzon, Turkey;
  • Organizing International Symposium on Scientific Problems and Long-term Preservation of Large-scale Ancient Underground Engineering in 2015, and venue: Longyou, China;
  • Annual Commission Meeting and an associated Workshop on different topics will be held every year in association with the ISRM International Symposium;
  • Book: A Proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Conservation of Ancient Sites, Publishier: Science Press of China;
  • ISRM Suggested Method(s):Manual of Conservation Ancient Sites;
  • Lecture tour(s): A training course for graduate students on preservation of Ancient Sites will be organized by CPAS jointly with the Getty Conservation Institute U.S.A. and London University, U.K. form 2015 to 2017 in Dunhuang, China;
  • A lecture of Ancient Sites will be organized by CPAS jointly with Dunhuang Academy of China in the different universities every year;
  • Others related: Continue to international collaborations with the Getty Conservation Institute U.S.A., the National Institute for Cultural Properties, Tokyo, Japan, Beck Foundation in Sweden on some research programmes for preservation of the world cultural heritage in China. Start to collaboration on Conservation of Mogao with Oxford University and other academic activities with different organizations.
