Prof. José Félix Pavón Mendoza was born in 1967 in Asuncion, obtained a BSc in Civil Engineering at the Catholic University (Paraguay) in 1991, and a MSc degree at the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil) in 1995.
He has been involved in the Paraguayan Geotechnical Society (SPG) and the ISRM since 2011, when he was SPG Vice President for Rock Mechanics for four years. In 2018 José Pavón participated in the creation of the SPG Young Geotechnical Committee and was Chair of the Paraguayan Geotechnical Society Congress. He has been elected as President of the Paraguayan Geotechnical Society for the term of office 2015-2019 and currently leads the Committee for the upcoming Latin American Symposium 2021, to be held in Asuncion.
At the present, José Pavón is a Professor of Geotechnics at the Catholic University in Asuncion, and he is actively involved in research and student academic counseling as a Thesis Advisor for Post Graduate Courses. He has published over 30 papers in journals and conferences, both in Paraguay and abroad.
His main professional activities are concentrated in the industry, rock mechanics - engineering geology - soil mechanics, rock mass characterization and classification, laboratory and in-situ tests, applied to slope stability, dams, tunnels and power transmission lines. Due to his large experience, Prof. Pavón is a member of the Geotechnical Standards for Highway Projects as a Consultant for the Paraguayan Transportation Department.
Currently, with more than 25 years’ experience in geotechnical area, José Pavón has been involved in large projects as an independent consultant in Jose Pavon & Asociados.
