Prof. Leandro R. Alejano is a professor in the Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Engineering at the University of Vigo (Spain).
He graduated as a Mining Engineer in Madrid in 1992 and obtained a Ph.D. in Mining Engineering in the Department of Mining Engineering, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain, in 1996, on numerical modelling of subsidence. He was appointed as an associate professor of Rock Mechanics at the University of Vigo in 1998 and has since been in charge of teaching and research programs in rock mechanics for mining. He has also taught in various international Masters in Spain and South America and made part of the jury of PhD thesis in Spain, France, Italy, Sweden and Norway. He co-authored a book on basic rock Mechanics in Spanish with more than 18,000 down-loads in the internet.
Prof. Alejano’s interests include rock and rock mass behavior with particular attention to post-failure behavior and dilatancy; tunnel design particularly focusing the convergence-confinement approach and numerical models; rock slope stability addressing toppling, wall slope and complex failures and rockfalls; mine design and control and rock mechanics laboratory work. He is also consultant for mining, quarrying, construction and energy companies at a national and international levels.
He was awarded various research projects on fundamental rock mechanics and applications. He supervised more than 50 M.Sc. thesis and 9 Ph.D. thesis. He published around 60 papers in relevant journals (h index 21) and 100 communications in congresses. He co-authored papers with colleagues from more than 20 countries. He is presently member of the Editorial Board of the reputed journals IJRM&MS, TUST and Archives of Mining Sciences. From 2013 to 2018 he served as Associate Editor of the International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences. He dictated invited conferences and courses in various Universities and research centers in Spain, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Canada, Sweden, Italy, Finland and China.
He has been member of the ISRM since 1994, he was member of the Board of the Spanish group from 2003 to 2014, Vice-president from 2014 to 2017 and President from 2017 to date. He is a member of the Commission on Testing methods and he chaired and organized the EUROCK 2014 Symposium in Vigo.
