President's 2017 New Year Address

Dear ISRM colleagues and friends,2016 has finally come to an end! It was a difficult year for the world, affected by increasing violence, poverty and damage to the environment. So, in this last message of the year I would most like to wish peace, increased respect and human dignity added to some strong concerns for the environment and the need for a sustainable development, because the planet is our common home where all of us live and experience the gift of living here.

For ISRM this was a year of much work for the Board. Here I want to thank once more our Vice-Presidents for their commitment to the Society working hard many times with the objective to help the President in some important decisions that needed to be taken. 2016 will be remembered as a year of intense activities and strong challenges to the Board.

In 2017 ISRM will celebrate its 55 years anniversary with continuous growth since its foundation in 1962. The last country to join us is Malaysia, making it the 60th National Group of the Society. In these last 55 years the world has witnessed great transformations, but thanks to the visions of the thirteen ISRM Past Presidents who preceded the current Board it was possible for ISRM to accompany the transformations and to build a modern Society. We are internationally recognized as a source of knowledge and guidance for rock mechanics research and for the performance of rock engineering works, ably assisted with timely suggested methods.

16th ISRM online lecture was delivered by Prof. Giovanni Barla

The 16th ISRM Online Lecture with the tittle "Challenges in the Understanding of TBM Excavation in Squeezing Conditions” was delivered by Prof. Giovanni Barla on 16th December and remains online on this page .

Giovanni Barla, former professor of rock mechanics at Politecnico di Torino, has been head of the Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering and vice-president of the School of Engineering. He has been instructor and associate professor at Columbia University, New York.Giovanni graduated in mining engineering at Politecnico di Torino, obtained the MScEng degree and the PhD degree at Columbia University, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, defending a thesis on the analytical and numerical analysis of stress distribution around underground excavations.Giovanni Barla has been president of the Italian Geotechnical Association (AGI) and vice-president for Europe of ISRM. Giovanni is editor of the Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering Journal. He received the ISRM fellow nomination, the IACMAG award for outstanding contributions, and the emeritus membership of AGI. He is honorary professor of Chongqing University and member elected of the Torino Academy of Science.

The research interests of Giovanni Barla span over a variety of topics in the fields of rock mechanics, tunnel engineering, rock slopes and dam engineering, numerical methods in geomechanics. He is among the small group of European researchers who studied and applied the finite element method in the field of rock and soil mechanics since the early developments of the technique. He is author and co-author of more than 300 papers, which cover subjects such as laboratory and in situ testing, rock mass characterization and classification; numerical modelling; performance monitoring and back analysis; rock slopes; tunnels and caverns.

Giovanni Barla is also an active international consultant. His activity is strictly related to his studies, providing valuable hints for pursuing new research topics, and brought him to become, during the nineties, principal and member of the International Board of Golder Associates. The projects in which he acted as designer, geotechnical consultant or responsible of the numerical studies are numerous and concern a variety of topics in rock engineering, including rock slopes, deep seated rock slides, dam foundations, conventional and mechanized tunnel excavations, and mining engineering.Giovanni is presently involved in a number of underground projects in Italy and Abroad. He is contributing at the design stage and during construction of the Alpine Base Tunnels and tunnels being excavated in difficult ground conditions, by using both conventional and/or mechanized excavation methods. In these cases rock mechanics an rock engineering concepts are being applied systematically and novel methods for efficient and safe construction underground are being developed. Also, the most interest is devoted to the development of civil protection strategies for rockslide hazard assessment, methods for real time monitoring and early warning, with reference to natural slopes where infrastructures and inhabited areas are located.

2017 ISRM International Symposium - AfriRock 2017, 2-7 October, Cape Town, South Africa


The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) and the South African National Institute of Rock Engineering (SANIRE) is the hosting and organising body for the first African Regional Rock Mechanics Symposium to be held in Cape Town 2017. Mining has traditionally been a mainstay of African economies, while Oil and Gas industries are rapidly growing throughout Africa. Infrastructure is being developed to support these industries. Rock engineering design is and therefore will continue to be essential for the growth of the continent. The 2017 ISRM International Rock Mechanics Symposium is to be held in Cape Town with the theme “Rock Mechanics for Africa”. Prior to the conference, the ISRM Board, Council and Commission meetings will take place and technical visits are being arranged for after the conference. EUROCK 2017 “Human Activity in Rock Masses”, Ostrava, Czech Republic – registration open!

Dear Colleagues,

I would like to inform you that registration for 2017 ISRM European Rock Mechanics Symposium (EUROCK 2017) has been openned!

The biggest ISRM European event in 2017 – EUROCK 2017 will be held in Ostrava, Czech Republic, in June, 20 - 22, 2017. This Symposium is the common endeavour of the Czech National Group of the ISRM and the Institute of Geonics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, who are doing their best to organize a pleasant and valuable event.

You are welcome to make use of the opportunity of early bird registration fees until January 15, 2017 as well as a special price for young colleagues at the age up to 35. The number of up to 35 years old participants is limited; your participation will depend on the order of entries.

Keynote lectures will be given by invited speakers from the field of rock mechanics and speakers presenting the selected excellent papers of the Symposium. We are very pleased that the following famous rock mechanics experts have already accepted our invitation to present their keynote lectures:

Jeju Island, South Korea, 10-13 May 2017, an ISRM Specialised Conference

Korean Society for Rock Mechanics (KSRM) cordially invites the international community of rock mechanics and rock engineering to attend the joint international symposium, the 2017 ISRM Young Scholars’ Symposium on Rock Mechanics (YSRM 2017 – an ISRM Specialized Conference) and the 2017 International Symposium on New Developments in Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (NDRMGE 2017). Both series of international conference have been well attended in the past decade since there were many ongoing or planned rock engineering projects with challenging issues and innovative technologies involved. Progressive Rock Failure Conference, 5-7 June 2017 - an ISRM Specialised Conference

Geological materials change their strength properties through time, which has significant implications for the stability of natural and artificial slopes, surface or subsurface excavations, and deep boreholes used for energy production. While some of these mechanical property changes lead to slow phenomena like creep others lead to rapid and hazardous deformations and failure of geological materials. Time-dependent aspects of weakening and failure in natural systems are, however, difficult to study as internal damage is not visible to the naked eye, and the underlying processes can last from several seconds to many thousands of years. Better understanding and predicting these processes represents a great challenge to those involved in the preservation of existing structures, future development of critical transport and energy infrastructure, and the assessment of natural hazards in response to a changing climate. By bringing together participants from diverse backgrounds, this event will provide an exciting opportunity to address processes controlling the degradation and failure of brittle rock across an exceptional range of spatial and temporal scales.

Join us in Monte Verità, Switzerland from June 5-9th, 2017, for three days of seminars, discussions, plus one day of integrated excursions arranged around five core themes: creep and stress corrosion, long term strength limits, progressive slope failure, environmental drivers, and, subsurface infrastructure. The core themes will allow practitioners and researchers from diverse backgrounds to progress beyond current knowledge barriers, and lay out a framework for the future evaluation of time-dependent weakening and failure of brittle rocks. Participants are encouraged to present recent insights derived from:

  • field observations in both surface and sub-surface environments,
  • laboratory testing,
  • theory and conceptual modelling, and,
  • advanced numerical methods.

A workshop will be arranged for the final day which will demonstrate practical approaches to observing and modelling progressive damage evolution and brittle failure using industry-leading tools and software. GeoProc 2017, Paris, France, 5-7 July, an ISRM Specialised Conference

As part of GeoProc conference series, this event carries forward certain traditions as well as breaks new grounds related to Coupled Thermo-Hydro-Mechano-Chemical (THMC) processes in Geosystems.

After Stockholm, 2003, Nanjing, 2006, Lille, 2008, Perth 2011 and Utah, 2015, the 6th GeoProc is held in Paris, France, at the Ecole des Ponts ParisTech campus, between 5 and 7 July 2017.

Geoproc2017 is co-organized by the École des Ponts ParisTech (ENPC), the French institute of science and technology for transport, spatial planning, development and networks (IFSTTAR), the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

The conference theme “Multiphysical processes and phenomena across the scales” symbolizes scientists, engineers and practitioners coming together from different backgrounds to address new emerging scientific issues for a wide range of natural and engineering phenomena in geological systems and energy production.


  • Reservoir mechanics (Nuclear waste disposal, CO2 sequestration, Energy storage, Petroleum engineering, Geothermal energy etc.)
  • Hydrauling fracturing
  • Induced seismicity, fault reactivation and landslides

First JTC1 Workshop on Advances in Landslide Understanding, Barcelona, 24-26 May 2017

The Joint Technical Committee on Natural Slopes and Landslides (JTC1) of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, the International Society for Rock Mechanics and the International Association for Engineering Geology is organizing the First JTC1 Workshop on Advances in Landslide Understanding to be held in Barcelona, Spain, 24-26 May 2017.

The aim of the Workshop is to promote discussion between scientists and engineers on topics which require attention because of difficulties in identification, triggering causes, mechanisms, modelling and prevention, such as:

  • Brittle failures / First time failures
  • Transition slow-fast motion
  • Stability of weathered profiles
  • Compound landslides
  • Landslides in reservoirs
  • Landslides in mines and tailings deposits
  • Soil-atmosphere interaction

Extended abstracts will be published in an electronic format book (Including ISBN). Selected papers will be collected in a Special Issue of an International Journal.

Time-Dependency in Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, by Ömer Aydan - a new book on the ISRM Book Series

This book is concerned with time-dependency in rock mechanics and rock engineering, whose spectrum is very wide. While the term “time-dependency” involves time-dependent behavior/rate-dependent behavior of rocks in a conventional sense, this books attempts to cover the spectrum as much as possible including coupled processes of thermal, hydrological and diffusion in rocks. It presents theoretical formulations, experiments, numerical formulation and examples of applications. Of paramount concern is the long-term response and stability of rock engineering structures, including for instance man-made and natural slopes and underground facilities such as tunnels and powerhouses.

The main features of the book are:

  • Discusses time-dependence of rocks and its evaluations
  • Deals with degradation of rocks in the long-term and its modeling
  • Examines coupling of heat transport, seepage and diffusion
  • Offers experimental procedures and practical examples
  • Contains numerical techniques and their applications

Dr. Ömer Aydan studied Mining Engineering at the Technical University of Istanbul, Turkey, Rock Mechanics and Excavation Engineering at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK (M.Sc.), and finally received his Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from Nagoya University, Japan. He has worked at seberal Universities in Japan and is currently Professor at the University of Ryukyus, Okinawa, Japan. Ömer has played an active role on numerous ISRM, Rock Mechanics National Group of Japan committees, and has organized several national and international conferences. He is Honorary Professor in Earth Science by Pamukkale University since 2008.

Ground Engineering - Principles and Practices for Underground Coal Mining, by Jim Galvin

This new book, authored by Prof. Jim Galvin, teaches readers ground engineering principles and related mining and risk management practices associated with underground coal mining. It establishes the basic elements of risk management and the fundamental principles of ground behaviour and then applies these to the essential building blocks of any underground coal mining system, comprising excavations, pillars, and interactions between workings.

A Report on the 9th Asian Rock Mechanics Symposium, Bali, Indonesia

The 9th ARMS of the ISRM was succesfully organised in Bali,17–20 October 2016. I would like to express my gratitude to the ISRM President, Vice President for Asia and Secretary General in particular, for supporting the Indonesia Rock Mechanics Society to hold this Symposium. It is also equally important to thank all colleagues of the ISRM, Petromindo (Event organizer), the Indonesian and international paper reviewers, the International Committee members, the sponsors and exhibitors, the faculty members and students of local universities and the “working students” of the Laboratory of Geomechanics and Mining Equipment of ITB.

Total participants registered were 241 people representing 23 countries (Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia-New Zealand, North America, and South America). The participants consist of 10 accompanying persons, 172 people from universities, and 69 people from companies/ professionals.

The Reception Night, sponsored by J Resources Nusantara, was held on 17 October and was attended by not less than 120 people.

Nine keynote lectures as designed, have been well delivered by Professors Resat Ulusay, Seokwon Jeon, Ernesto Villaescusa, Norikazu Shimizu, Shunsuke Sakurai, Jian Zhao, Pinnaduwa Kulatilake, Omer Aydan and Suseno Kramadibrata.

The 88 presentations were classified into 7 session topics, including of energy, infrastructures, rock mass characterization, constitutive model & numerical modeling, rock excavation, underground mine stability, and open pit slope stability. A total of 44 posters was displayed.

The student drilling competition was successfully conducted safely without any accident/injury prior to the Symposium and the competition was participated by 16 students consisting of 3 students from Korea, a student from China, a student from United Arab Emirates, a student from Nepal, 3 students from Japan, and 6 students from Indonesia. It is worth mentioned that 4 participants were female students. Thanks to Dr. Khrisna Kanta Panthi (Nepal-Norway) and Dr. Ganda Simangunsong (ITB) for assessing the safety procedure. It is of importance to note that the drilling competition was the first time performed in the ARMS history. Hopefully, in the next ARMSs the drilling competition can be one of the compulsory agendas.

80 participants attended the Student Night and the party which was held by the pool of the Stone hotel went well. The committee was able to manage the Student Night according to plan in which all the participant enjoyed the night and hopefully become memorable event. Awarding Night sponsored by PT Freeport Indonesia, was very much appreciated and the art performances were gorgeous for approximately 100 participants.

Ten Scholarships, each for 5 million IDR were ceremonially given in the Awarding Night, as well as the winners of the student drilling competition. The individual recipients of such scholarship came from China, Korea, Indonesia, India, Japan (2 students), Malaysia, Russia, Thailand and United Arab Emirates.

The two best papers were awarded to individual authors from Japan (General) and China (Young Scientist) and two best posters were awarded to authors, individually, from Japan (General) and Korea (Young Scientist).

Asian Council Meeting was held on 17 October, chaired by Prof. Seokwon Jeon (VP Asia ISRM).

A Report on the International Conference on Recent Advances in Rock Engineering (RARE-2016)

The National Institute of Rock Mechanics (NIRM), Bengaluru, has successfully conducted the Conference RARE-2016, as scheduled on 16th to 18th November, 2016 at Movenpick Hotel & Spa, Bengaluru. The Conference was organized under the aegis of the International Society for Rock Mechanics as a Specialized Conference of ISRM, supported by the Indian National Group of ISRM, and is patronized by the Ministry of Mines of India, along with the Ministry of Coal and the Department of Science and Technology.

In the Inaugural Session on 16th, at the outset, the good-will message of Dr Seokwon Jeon (ISRM Vice President for Asia) was read out by the Chairman, Organizing Committee of RARE-2016. The Conference was formally inaugurated by Sri R Sridharan, Special Secretary, Ministry of Mines, Govt of India. The Inaugural Session was presided over by Prof BB Dhar (former Director, Central Mining Research Institute, now CIMFR), Sri M Raju (Director General, Geological Survey of India), Sri Dorji Phuntshok, (Joint Managing Director, PHPA 1&2, Bhutan) and Dr PK Singh (Director, Central Institute of Mining & Fuel Research).

The Conference was attended by 285 participants including over 150 registered delegates, from India, Bhutan, China, Ireland, Lebanon, Malaysia, Qatar, South Africa and USA. The delegates represented nearly 70 organizations from India and abroad. Some of the major institutes who participated in the Conference are from the following sectors: Research & Academic Institutions, Mining Engineering and Hydroelectric Companies, Infrastructure Industries, Manufacturers & Suppliers. The Conference was sponsored by 25 organizations,

A 620-page print volume of the Conference (+CD ) was brought out ahead of the event; it contained the full texts of the accepted papers as well as the Keynote Papers. The papers were also published on-line by Atlantis Press ( ). In addition, Abstracts of the papers and full text of the Keynote Papers were printed as a Souvenir volume. All the authors of the accepted papers were given an opportunity to make oral presentations.

The two evenings of the Conference were made colourful, with a stick & string-. manipulated Puppet Show (on the story of “Ashtavakra” by Dhaatu group, Bengaluru) on 16th evening, and with a Contemporary Dance programme (by Rhythmotion group, Bengaluru) on 17th evening.

A Recommendations Committee was formed out of the eminent personalities among the participants in the Conference, with Mr Dorji Phuntshok as its Chairman. Based on the papers presented and the discussions held during the 3-day Conference, a set of recommendations were drafted. The Valedictory Session was held on 18th evening. Prof BB Dhar presided over the Session, in which the draft recommendations were presented by the Chairman of the Committee. The participants deliberated on the points, and the recommendations were finalized. After presentation of a Vote of Thanks by the Organizing Secretary, Dr HS Venkatesh, the Conference was formally closed.

Report on the GEO-EXPO 2016 Scientific and Expert Conference,
Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, 7-8 October 2016

GEO-EXPO 2016, the sixth Scientific and Expert Conference was held at the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy in the in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, 7-8 October 2016.

The conference was organized by Geotechnical Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the ISRM National Group. The Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy was the co-organizer of the event. More than 100 participants from Japan, Russia, Turkey, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina attended the Conference.

At the opening ceremony, the President of the Geotechnical Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Prof. Sabid Zekan, welcomed the delegates and invited Prof. Norikazu Shimizu, the ISRM Vice President, to address to the conference participants.

Geotechnics, Ecological Engineering and Sustainable Development were the conference themes. In addition, 32 papers were presented on the following topics: rock mechanics, landslides, landfills, foundations, roads, underground objects, open pits, materials and infrastructure, ground improvement and supports and soil pollution.

The participants benefited from five keynote lectures, presented by distinguished professionals from Japan, Russia, Croatia and Slovenia. The president of Society's Assembly, Amer DZindo, took a moment to acknowledge and recognize the contribution of the distinguished professionals in the field of Geotechnics in Bosnia and Herzegovina and awarded the plaques on behalf of Society. "Euro norms in geotechnics and the application in Bosnia and Herzegovina" was the topic of the round table discussion on second day of the conference.

Upon the conference closure, the delegates were offered to join a professional tourist visit to the Banja Luka Doboj highway facilities.
