The first issue of the ISRM News Journal was published in 1992, as an initiative of the Board chaired by Prof. Charles Fairhurst. Until 2003 the News Journal was published in paper form and mailed to all members of the ISRM. The ISRM Board decided that, from 2004 onwards, only one issue per year would be printed on paper, whereas the other ones would be distributed electronically only.

Since 2007 the ISRM News Journal has one yearly issue, published in December, reflecting the activity of the ISRM during that year. It is available for download from the website and distributed in paper to all ISRM members.
