The Vietrock 2015 international symposium: “Rock Mechanics for Sustainable Development” was held at the M.O.P Palace Hotel in Hanoi, Vietnam, on 12-13 March 2015 as an ISRM specialized conference 2015, organized by International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM), Vietnam Society for Rock Mechanics, and Vietnamese N.G of ISRM. The total number of participants was 150. The participants included more than 50 international participants from 12 country and regions.
The symposium started on 12 March. The symposium had the honor of welcoming H.E Academicians Dang Vu Minh president of Vietnam Union Sciences and Technology Associate (VUSTA). The symposium had the honor of welcoming Prof. Chung-in Lee (ISRM Fellows 2013) presentation.
The six keynote lectures were presented by Prof. Norikazu Shimizu (Yamaguchi University, Japan) and Prof. Zhu Hehua (Tongji University, China), Prof. Jian Zhao (Monash University, Australia), Prof. Ki-Bok Min (Seoul National University, Korea) V. Prof. Lu Ming (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) and Prof. Eivind Grøv (SINTEF Building and Infrastructure, Norway).
Over the two days of the symposium, six excellent keynote lectures, one special session organized by KSRM, SNU, KNOC, KIGAM and 44 paper speakers were presented in 6 parallel session. The 58 papers with 520 page Symposium proceedings were prepared and published by the Publishing House for Sciences and Technology, Hanoi, Vietnam.
The purpose of Vietrock 2015 symposium is to contribute to the knowledge Rock Mechanics for Sustainable Development of Vietnam. This first time, once international symposium was held in Vietnam. The symposium will create favorable opportunities for future meetings, cooperation and the exchange of ideas and experience between the scientists, technologists, managers in the field Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering.
The symposium has been attended and supported by international partner such: Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, Japanese Committee for Rock Mechanics, Korean Society for Rock Mechanics, Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering Geology (Singapore), Seoul National University (Korea), Department of Geotechnical Engineering - College of Civil Engineering, Tongji University (China), …
The symposium closed on 13 March. Dr. Ying xin Zhou, Vice president of ISRM for Asia, delivered a presentation about ISRM National Groups in the world, Asian Family rock mechanics and ASRM 9 in Bali, Indonesia 2016.
On 14 March, there was a conference tour to the Halong Bay as an official social event where all the organizing committee members and delegates were invited to share ideas and discuss future activities for the development of Asian Rock Mechanics.
